ABB is providing crucial service support for hundreds of strategic motors, thus helping Tenaris plant in Dharmine, Italy to maintain 24-hour continuous production.
To ensure uninterrupted production, Tenaris signed a global total motor management (TMM) contract with ABB to implement planned, preventive and predictive maintenance plans. The program focuses on reducing the maintenance frequency of 460 motors driving field rolling mills and other important production equipment.
Tenaris is the world's leading manufacturer of steel pipe products in the energy industry. Dharmine Plant is Tenaris' operating headquarters in Italy, manufacturing seamless steel pipes for oil, natural gas and industrial automation industries. The factory in Dharmine operates around the clock and produces about 800000 tons of products every year.
"For infrastructure of this scale, the efficiency and timeliness of its maintenance are critical to the profitability of the company," said Ettore Martinelli, Tenaris Maintenance Engineering Director. "The TMM contract we signed with ABB can help us effectively reduce the frequency of motor maintenance, thus more reliably ensuring the normal operation time of our motors."
Tenaris now takes Industry 4.0 as the core of its maintenance activities, especially remote monitoring and preventive maintenance. At the end of 2018, the factory expanded the existing TMM contract and used 20 sets of ABB Ability for high-voltage motors ™ MACHsense-R status monitoring system and 290 ABB Capabilities for low-voltage motors running important pumps and fans ™ Smart sensors are included.
The wireless gateway automatically collects data from the motor and transmits the data to a special portal for storage and analysis. Tenaris engineers have access to view the status of all monitored motors. In addition, if there are any faults and exceptions, the system will send alerts to the maintenance team via email.

"The intelligent sensor has detected the abnormality of the motor and sent out an alarm status signal. For example, the sensor will recognize the exact moment when the pump starts to fail," Martinelli said. "The intelligent sensor has also been proven to be able to effectively detect the vibration indicating bearing failure and the abnormal voltage and power indicating short circuit." “ABB Ability ™ The condition monitoring solution enables Tenaris to easily monitor all high-voltage and low-voltage motors and predict maintenance needs, "ABB Ability ™ Jonas Spoorendonk, global product manager of smart sensors, said, "By knowing the equipment status, you can plan the maintenance plan in advance and keep it consistent with planned production downtime."
Dharmine will continue to add more sensors and lead other Tenaris operations to use sensor technology.
ABB technology drives the refrigeration system and enters the largest bakery in Switzerland
The new logistics center of Coop Group, the largest bakery in Switzerland, with a long history of 150 years, will reduce the annual carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 10000 tons. ABB and Johnson Controls have contributed to this goal by providing energy efficient motors and variable speed drives (VSDs) for ultra modern refrigeration systems.
Coop Group originated in Switzerland and has grown from a small consumer goods company to an international retail and wholesale enterprise with 85000 employees after more than 150 years. Coop's new logistics center in Shafishaim, Algol, covers a total area of 240000 square meters (m2), which is one of the largest buildings in Switzerland. It is the largest bakery and cake shop in Switzerland, the national distribution center for frozen products, and the regional distribution center for fresh food and household goods.
Coop's goal is to become a more environmentally friendly, more efficient and faster large-scale food, beverage, cleaning and hygiene products and other household products distributor and manufacturer. The completion of this pioneering logistics center marks the beginning of a new era for Coop. The advanced automation system of the center has set a new benchmark for logistics management and sustainability. Moreover, Coop has reduced the annual CO2 emissions by more than 10000 tons - the annual reduction is equivalent to eliminating nearly 2000 ordinary cars on the road, making a significant contribution to the overall CO2 vision of Coop - realizing CO2 neutral operation in all sectors by 2023.
