Advanced technology contributes to sustainability
Coop's large bakery is one of the most modern facilities in Europe. It has about 600 employees and produces about 60000 tons of baked products every year. In addition, it also produces frozen dough products, which are directly frozen and delivered to Coop Supermarket in Switzerland for baking fresh food in the store.
Refrigeration has an important influence on the production process. The four refrigeration systems provided provide a total cooling power of 8 megawatts (MW) - equivalent to about 40000 household refrigerators. These refrigeration systems use natural refrigerant ammonia to provide a high level of energy efficiency, which helps support Coop's CO2 vision. The refrigeration system is designed and installed by Johnson Controls and is customized according to the specific needs and requirements of Coop.
Very high efficiency class motors and drives
ABB technology is deeply integrated into the operation of the center. The compressor in the coolant circuit is driven by ABB motors and variable speed drives. The motor has a very high efficiency class IE4, and the efficiency is up to 97% when working at full load. The variable speed driver accurately controls the motor speed according to the required cooling output, which can further save power.
The refrigeration system has been operating accurately since it was put into use in 2016. Beat Schuppisser, the branch manager in charge of Johnson Controls industrial refrigeration and general project manager of refrigeration system, was very satisfied with the project: "We have installed an advanced system with high energy efficiency. Combining IE4 motor and VSD is an excellent energy efficiency solution at present."

Schuppisser said that obtaining motors and variable speed drives from a single source is crucial for Johnson Controls. This is the only way to ensure that the supply and installation processes are coordinated as efficiently as possible.
"The ABB team provided us with excellent advice and closely supported the project. For example, they thoroughly checked the system settings before putting it into use. This is an important requirement to ensure that all aspects work seamlessly afterwards." Schuppisser explained.

ABB Promotion Center Efficiency
In addition to motors and variable speed drives, ABB robots are also used in the new logistics facilities. Shafei Shaim's return center will receive thousands of air transport crates sent back by Coop's 400 branches. Fifteen ABB robots unload crates from shipping containers and sort and stack them. IRB 360 FlexPicker industrial robot is also used in the bakery to handle some dough processing steps.
The photovoltaic array on the roof of the logistics facility produces about 250000 kWh of electricity for the center every year – enough electricity for a typical electric vehicle to travel 1 million kilometers. Seven ABB solar inverters convert the direct current (DC) generated by the solar panel into the alternating current (AC) required for feeding to the power supply network of the logistics center.
