Nestled in Larvik, about 100 kilometers southwest of Oslo, Norway, Nasta AS is mainly engaged in the distribution of Hitachi heavy construction machinery. The conversion process includes removing the existing fuel tank and diesel engine, installing the motor and transmission equipment, as well as the energy management system, battery and charging solution and power connection. "Nasta's electrification journey began in 2019, when we obtained a project to provide zero emission construction machinery for a road construction project in downtown Oslo," recalled Sjur Wethal Helljesen, senior consultant of Nasta, "This is the first engineering project in Oslo that requires zero emission operation, and we have a lot to learn in the field of electrification. After completing this project, we began to communicate with ABB. We immediately realized that ABB can provide us with transmission system equipment and valuable technology."
Powertrain specially designed for heavy vehicles
ABB's electric drive system solutions include AMXE motors and HES880 frequency converters designed specifically for the electrification of heavy vehicles. It can be used as a frequency converter to drive the motor, or as a two-way converter to connect with the power grid, or as a DC/DC converter to connect with the battery. The battery capacity in Nasta's current redesigned scheme is up to 300 kilowatt hours, and the vehicle can work for 4-6 hours." Electrification of heavy vehicles can produce significant environmental benefits. A diesel powered 24 ton excavator usually uses about 18000 liters of fuel per year, and emits about 48 tons of carbon dioxide per year. After upgrading, these CO2 emissions and sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions will be eliminated, and the noise level of the equipment will also be effectively reduced. These factors are conducive to improving the environment, not only for the workers at the construction site, but also for the residents and workers near the site. In addition, the operator told Nasta that the electrified machinery was more responsive when excavating.
Nasta is a family business with an annual turnover of approximately NOK 1.2 billion. As it has accumulated profound experience in the field of heavy electrical machinery, it is often required to provide suggestions on policies and regulations for zero emission construction sites.
