I am very proud to be a member of ABB team and help break the new world record! Our motors and drives power two new cable cars in the mountains of Switzerland and Germany. In December 2017, the steepest cable car in the world began to operate in Stoss, Switzerland. A new ultra modern cableway has just started to run on the highest mountain in Germany, Zugspitze, breaking three world records.
There is a suspended cable car system in the cableway of Zugspitze Mountain in Bavaria. Its steel column is 127 meters high, which is the highest; It overcomes the highest elevation difference with a height of 1950m. The total length from the base station to the top of the mountain is 3213m, which is the longest span. It can carry 580 passengers per hour - almost three times as many as the cable car it replaced in 50 years.
At the same time, this futuristic Stowe cable car, with a circular design car, runs at a speed of 10 meters per second on a gradient of 0% to 110%. Its driverless carriage can transport 1500 people in each direction every hour.
However, what makes me most proud is that behind these impressive modern appearances is the engineering achievements made by the ABB team. The Stoss cable car has two customized high-performance motors that help double the speed of the old railway. The total output of these motors is 2.3 MW, which provides power for the cable car. The cable car needs a lot of energy to travel on steep slopes.
The Zugspitze ropeway uses ABB drives and motors. Its gondola can climb up to 104% of steep slopes to reach the top, which requires a strong driving concept - especially our ACS880 drive. Qigu Station is equipped with two ABB 800KW three-phase alternators
